Why We Bring Photographers Into Strategy Meetings, Not Just Shoot Days

Why We Bring Photographers Into Strategy Meetings, Not Just Shoot Days

Agencies talk a lot about “integrated creative.” In practice, integration usually stops at copy and design. Photography gets treated as a line item — something you schedule near the end, once everything else is locked.

At Grey Matter Direct, a digital marketing agency based in Mt. Laurel, NJ, we do it differently, and our recent project with Wiley Mission is a good example of why.

A Full-Service Agency for South Jersey Businesses and OrganizationsWiley Mission 2025 Annual Report

Grey Matter Direct is a digital marketing agency serving businesses, nonprofits, and organizations throughout South Jersey — including Mount Laurel, Cherry Hill, Marlton, Moorestown, Voorhees, and Haddonfield — as well as Philadelphia. While digital strategy is our core focus, we’re also a full-service marketing partner: alongside websites, SEO, content, and digital campaigns, we plan and produce traditional print advertising — annual reports, direct mail, brochures, and print collateral — so our clients get one coordinated strategy across every channel their audience actually sees, print and digital alike.

The Wiley Mission project is a good example of that combined approach in action: the annual report was a print deliverable, and their website updates were digital, and both needed to work from the same photography and the same story.

The Client

Wiley Mission is a continuing care retirement community in Marlton, NJ, with a campus that includes 137 homes across 55 acres, a full continuum of care from independent living through long-term rehabilitation, and a multi-generational presence that extends to a church and preschool on the same grounds. When we started working on their annual report, we knew early that photography wasn’t going to be just a supporting element — it was going to carry a significant share of the emotional and strategic weight of both pieces.

Annual reports for organizations like Wiley Mission have a specific job: they need to reassure current families, build confidence with prospective ones, and give donors a reason to believe their support matters. None of that happens with stock photography or an afterthought shoot.

Bringing the Photographer In Early

Bridget worked with the Grey Matter team and Gary F. Gilmore (CEO) and Chris Cinardo (COO) of Wiley Mission to plan the shots for their annual report.

For this project, we partnered with Bridget Horgan Bell, a corporate and organizational photographer based in Cherry Hill, NJ. Instead of handing Bridget a shot list after our layouts were finalized, we brought her into the planning conversation — walking through what the annual report needed to prove, where the website’s messaging needed visual reinforcement, and which parts of the Wiley Mission campus and community actually told the story we were trying to tell.

That upfront collaboration meant Bridget arrived on-site already thinking like a strategic partner rather than a vendor executing a checklist. On shoot day, our team worked alongside her through the Wiley Mission campus, coordinating in real time on composition, staff and resident comfort, and how each image needed to function once it landed in a specific layout — a very different set of requirements for a printed annual report spread versus a website hero image.

What This Approach Delivers for South Jersey Clients

The difference shows up in the final product. Because the photography was built around the same strategic goals as the copy and design — and because our team plans for both print and digital output from the start — the annual report and website don’t feel like they were assembled from separate workstreams stitched together. They feel like one coherent piece of storytelling, whether a donor is holding the printed report or scrolling the website.

This is the model we use whenever photography plays a meaningful role in a project: bring the right photographer in during strategy, not after it, and plan the creative for every channel it needs to live in from the start. It takes more coordination upfront, but it consistently produces work that performs better across print and digital alike.

Common Questions About Working With Grey Matter Direct

Where is Grey Matter Direct based, and who do you serve?

We’re based in Mt. Laurel, NJ, and work with businesses, nonprofits, and organizations throughout South Jersey — including Cherry Hill, Marlton, Moorestown, Voorhees, and Haddonfield — as well as Philadelphia.

Are you strictly a digital agency?

No. We’re a full-service marketing agency. Digital strategy, SEO, websites, and content are core to what we do, but we also plan and produce traditional print advertising — annual reports, direct mail, and print collateral — as part of one coordinated strategy rather than a separate add-on.

Do you work with outside creative partners, like photographers?

Yes, and we consider it one of the strengths of how we work. On the Wiley Mission project, we partnered directly with corporate photographer Bridget Horgan Bell from the strategy phase through final delivery, rather than treating photography as an outsourced afterthought.

If your organization is planning an annual report, website refresh, or any project that needs to work across print and digital, we’d be glad to talk through how we approach that coordination.
