What Is a Google AI Overview and How Does It Affect Your NJ & Philadelphia Business Website Traffic?

Something Changed — And Most NJ & Philadelphia Business Owners Haven’t Been Told What

If your website traffic has declined in the past twelve months and you have not been able to explain why — your Google rankings look the same, your content has not changed, nothing obvious has gone wrong — there is a strong chance you are experiencing the impact of Google AI Overviews.

You are not alone. This is happening to businesses and publishers across New Jersey, Philadelphia, and the entire United States simultaneously. The majority of business owners have never heard a clear explanation of what Google AI Overviews are, how they work, or what to do about them. This post is that explanation.

What Is a Google AI Overview?

A Google AI Overview is an AI-generated summary that appears at the very top of certain Google search results — above all organic links, above paid ads in many cases — that attempts to answer the user’s query directly without requiring them to click through to any website.

Google AI Overviews were rolled out broadly to all U.S. users in May 2024, powered by Google’s Gemini AI model. When a Google AI Overview appears, it typically:

  • Synthesizes information from multiple web sources into a single paragraph or bulleted summary
  • Displays that summary prominently at the top of the search results page
  • Cites two to six source links within or below the summary
  • Pushes all traditional organic search links significantly further down the page

Around 50% of search queries in the United States now generate Google AI Overview responses (Heroic Rankings, 2026)

The first organic result, when an AI Overview is present, often appears approximately 1,674 pixels down the page — well below the fold on most screens (Search Engine Journal, 2026)

For many queries, users now get the answer they were looking for without ever clicking on a single website. This is the core of what has changed.

The Numbers Every NJ & Philadelphia Business Owner Needs to See

The data on how Google AI Overviews are affecting website traffic is more severe than most marketing commentary has communicated.

The CTR impact:

Organic CTR dropped from 1.76% to 0.61% for queries with AI Overviews — a 61% collapse (Seer Interactive, analysis of 25.1M organic impressions, 2025)

Paid CTR for queries with AI Overviews fell from 19.7% to 6.34% — a 68% decline (Seer Interactive, 2025)

Even queries without AI Overviews experienced a 41% year-over-year decline in organic CTR

The traffic loss:

Organic search clicks have dropped 42% since Google AI Overviews expanded (Relevant Audience, 2026)

Classic organic click share down 11–23 percentage points across every vertical measured (ALM Corp, February 2026)

Zero-click is the new normal:

58% of Google searches now end without any click to a website (Heroic Rankings, 2026)

On mobile, the zero-click rate is 77% (The Digital Bloom, 2026)

The most important number for NJ and Philadelphia local businesses: AI Overviews appear in only about 7% of local searches. Local search remains your most protected, highest-ROI channel.

The silver lining — being cited matters enormously:

Brands cited in AI Overviews earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than those not cited (Seer Interactive, 2026)

63% of businesses say Google AI Overviews have had a positive effect on their visibility since rollout (Heroic Rankings, 2026) — these are businesses earning citation, not just traffic loss

Why Is This Happening? Google’s Incentive Explained

Google makes its money from advertising — from keeping users engaged on Google properties long enough to serve them ads. Every time a user clicks through to a website, they leave Google’s ecosystem. Every time a user gets their answer from an AI Overview and stays on Google.com, Google has an opportunity to show them more ads and more Google products.

All indicators suggest AI Overviews will continue aggressive expansion through 2026 and beyond. Google’s business incentive is clear: keeping users on Google properties increases opportunities to serve ads and collect data. AI Overviews are not going away.

What Types of Content Are Most Affected — And What Is Protected

Most affected: informational and educational content

88% of keywords that trigger AI Overviews are of informational intent, according to Heroic Rankings research. Broad educational content — ‘what is email marketing,’ ‘how does SEO work,’ ‘what are symptoms of anxiety’ — is the content most directly displaced. Searches containing eight words or more are 7x more likely to trigger a Google AI Overview — and these long-tail informational queries are exactly the content many businesses have built their SEO strategies around.

Less affected: local, transactional, and branded searches

AI Overviews appear in only about 7% of local searches. Searches like ‘digital marketing agency Mt. Laurel NJ,’ ‘behavioral health center near Philadelphia,’ and ‘SEO company Cherry Hill NJ’ — the queries that generate real leads for local businesses — still largely deliver traditional clickable results.

Branded searches get even better results. Branded queries with AI Overviews see an 18% increase in click-through rate, according to Amsive research. When AI Overviews mention your specific brand, it conveys authority that drives more clicks, not fewer.

An important nuance: AI Overview sources are volatile

About 70% of the pages cited in AI Overviews change over any two to three month period — and these changes are not linked to traditional organic rankings, according to Authoritas research. This volatility creates an ongoing opportunity for well-optimized content to earn citation, and means that not appearing today does not mean you cannot appear tomorrow.

What This Means for Different Types of NJ & Philadelphia Businesses

Local service businesses

This is the most protected category. Your target clients search with local intent and those queries trigger AI Overviews only about 7% of the time. Your traditional local SEO investment remains high-ROI and relatively stable. Your highest risk: broad educational blog content targeting informational queries, which may already be seeing traffic declines.

Behavioral health and healthcare organizations

Healthcare is one of the most heavily AI-Overviewed content categories for informational queries. But local searches — ‘behavioral health center Burlington County,’ ‘psychiatrist accepting Medicaid Pennsauken NJ,’ ‘addiction treatment near Philadelphia’ — remain largely protected. Strategic priority: double down on local SEO for location-specific queries, and build GEO strategy to earn AI Overview citations for broader educational queries.

Consumer brands and retailers

AI Overview growth reached 206% in retail. Informational and comparison queries are frequently absorbed. Product-specific and transactional queries remain more protected. Bottom-of-funnel, intent-specific content earns the highest AI referral traffic in this category.

B2B professional services

B2B has seen 11–23 percentage point declines in organic click share across verticals (ALM Corp, February 2026). Most effective adaptation: focus content investment on specific, bottom-of-funnel, intent-specific content rather than broad educational content.

What NJ & Philadelphia Businesses Should Actually Do

Part 1: Protect your local search foundation

Local SEO is your most stable, highest-ROI channel. AI Overviews appear in only 7% of local searches. Every investment in Google Business Profile optimization, local citations, location-specific content, and Google review accumulation remains sound. If you have not fully optimized your GBP and accumulated 30+ Google reviews, these are your highest-priority actions right now.

Part 2: Shift your content strategy toward citation-worthy content

The broad informational content strategy that worked in 2022 is the content most directly displaced by AI Overviews. What works in 2026:

  • Focus on specific, expert-authored, locally-anchored content rather than generic educational content. ‘What Is Email Marketing?’ gets absorbed. ‘How South Jersey B2B Companies Are Using AI Email Marketing to Generate More Leads in 2026 — A Guide from Ned Barrett’ earns citation.
  • Build FAQ sections with FAQPage schema on every key page — the content format most likely to be cited within AI Overviews
  • Target ‘People Also Ask’ questions — 81% of Google AI Overviews include a PAA section
  • Prioritize content freshness — AI favors current data over stale pages, and updating content with current statistics improves citation likelihood

Part 3: Build GEO alongside traditional SEO

GEO is the additional layer of optimization specifically designed to earn AI citation. Core GEO practices for NJ and Philadelphia businesses:

  • Schema markup implementation (LocalBusiness, Organization, Service, FAQPage, Person)
  • Named expert authorship with verifiable credentials on all published content
  • Consistent entity management — identical business information across all platforms
  • An llms.txt file at your domain root that explicitly tells AI crawlers what your business does
  • Brand signal building — press coverage, directory listings, third-party mentions
  • Answer-first content structure — leading every section with the direct answer before providing context

Measuring Your AI Overview Impact: A Practical Checklist for NJ Businesses

In Google Search Console:

  • Check your CTR trend over 12 months. Declining CTR alongside stable rankings is a classic AI Overview impact signal.
  • Look for queries where impressions increased but clicks did not — double-counting from simultaneous AI Overview and organic appearances.
  • Filter for your top informational queries. Sharp CTR drops indicate AI Overview displacement.

Manually in Google search:

  • Search for your 10 most important keywords. How many trigger an AI Overview? Is your business cited within them?
  • Note how far down the page your organic listing appears when an AI Overview is present.

In Google Analytics:

  • Check organic search traffic trend by landing page. Informational pages with the sharpest declines are your AI Overview casualties.
  • Check referral traffic from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai — any traffic here confirms AI citation.

Frequently Asked Questions: Google AI Overviews for NJ & Philadelphia Businesses

What is a Google AI Overview in plain English?

A Google AI Overview is an AI-generated summary appearing at the top of certain Google search results that answers the user’s question directly without requiring any website clicks. It is now present in approximately 50% of U.S. Google searches.

Why has my website traffic dropped even though my rankings haven’t changed?

This is the most common symptom of AI Overview impact. Impressions may look stable while clicks decline. If your rankings are holding but traffic is dropping, AI Overviews displacing clicks for your key queries is the most likely explanation.

Are Google AI Overviews affecting local searches for NJ businesses?

Less than most searches. AI Overviews appear in only about 7% of local searches, compared to approximately 50% of all Google searches. Local searches remain significantly more protected from AI Overview disruption than informational searches.

What is the difference between a Google AI Overview and ChatGPT?

Google AI Overviews appear within Google’s standard search results page. ChatGPT is a separate application at chatgpt.com. Both are forms of AI-powered search but different products from different companies. Both benefit from GEO strategy, but with some differences in specific technical approaches.

Can I be cited in a Google AI Overview without being on page one of Google?

Yes, though it is less common. 76.1% of URLs cited in AI Overviews rank in the top 10, but pages outside the top 10 that directly answer a specific question in well-structured content can earn AI Overview citations.
